More than half of all speech-language therapists are employed in schools. Working with school-age children, school speech therapists develop individualized plans of care for each student, work with students, parents and teachers to implement their plans of care, evaluate student populations for potential issues and consult with educators and counselors on student issues related to speech pathology.
Employment prospects for school speech therapists has improved over the last several years and school therapists are expected to remain in high demand for the immediate future. Federal special education mandates, along with greater awareness of the issues surrounding students with special needs, has led to this growth in school speech therapists and is unlikely to abate any time soon.
