  Reaping the Benefits of
a Traveling Healthcare Career

Traveling healthcare companies need new travelers every day. These companies, however, are in fierce competition with others in the industry. To help entice travelers, the best companies offer not just top pay and benefits but products, services and special programs designed especially to suit your needs.

If you have the skills and experience these companies are looking for, you're in an excellent position to take advantage of what they're offering. Here are just a few examples of what you can expect as a healthcare traveler.

Frequent Nurse Traveler Programs

Just like frequent flier programs so common with airlines, some travel companies offer award points for each assignment you complete. You can redeem these points, once they have reached a certain level, for cash, vacations, products, services and more.

Travel Nursing Sign-on/Completion Bonuses

The top traveling companies offer cash bonuses when you accept an assignment (these are generally 13 weeks long). Others offer bonuses after you've completed an assignment. The size of the bonus usually depends on the type of assignment: you may get a bigger bonus, for example, if the facility has a difficult time attracting nurses or filling certain positions. Bonuses usually range from $250 to $2,000. In some cases, you can earn an even larger completion bonus after completing a pre-determined number of assignments or by traveling with a company for a certain number of years.

Travel Nurse Referral Bonuses

Many companies offer this benefit to their travelers. Once you refer a nurse to a company and that nurse completes an assignment, you're rewarded with a cash bonus.

Travel Nurse Travel Expenses

All travel companies reimburse for travel expenses from one assignment to the next, either airfare or mileage reimbursement.

Housing for Travel Nurses

Each company provides housing or a housing allowance. Depending on the company, you may get to select the type of housing you want. Some companies offer only single-occupancy apartments. Others offer only shared housing, two bedroom, two bath apartments, and do their best to match you with a nurse whose profile closely matches yours. For example, a non-smoker would not be placed with a traveler who smokes.

Most companies will meet your special needs. If you'd prefer a single when they only have shared apartments available, or if you wish to bring your spouse, a child or pet along with you, they will usually accommodate you. Keep in mind, though, that you may have to pay a small fee to get special housing. Also, some companies pay all of your utility costs while others do not (phone bills not included).

Insurance for Traveling Nurses

The best companies offer comprehensive insurance packages. These packages include health, life, disability and, in most cases, dental insurance. Although only a few companies pay the full cost of your insurance benefits, most companies do pay a large percentage of them. In most cases, you're only responsible for a small "co-payment."

Retirement Plans for Travel Nurses

The more assignments you take with one travel company, the greater the benefits. The top travel companies offer 401(k) or other retirement plans so you may reap the benefits of contributing to your retirement. Some companies match your contributions up to a set amount. After a designated amount of time with one particular company, you are fully vested and may keep their contributions to their plan.

Travel Nurse Continuing Education

Some companies offer free Continuing Education courses, while others reimburse travelers for course costs.

Special Discounts for Travel Nurses

Top companies provide travelers with discounts on pagers, cell phones, scrubs, luggage, rental cars, health club memberships, hotels and more.

Direct Deposit for Travel Nurses

Depositing your paycheck directly into your bank account is a service offered by some travel companies. As an experienced healthcare professional, you have a lot to offer a traveling healthcare company. Carefully consider the benefits and special programs provided by each potential employer before taking an assignment.
