Job Description
Qualifications: Minimum of 18 months in Polysomnography required. Current certification by the American Association of Sleep Technologists. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card. 20 wpm. Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate of science degree with emphasis in polysomnography or successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less then one (1) year duration associated with a state licensed and/or accredited educational facility or equivalent experience with documented proficiency as a Polysomnographic Technician. Ten (10) continuing educational hours per year in sleep related topics required. Consistently demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to customers, contracted providers, and vendors.Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. High School diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years experience, must be a registered Sleep Technologist. Completion of A-Step program. Excellent communication and good public relation skills. Computer knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Duties: Precepts and oversees the Polysomnographic Technician. Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions. Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professional accepted guidelines. Scores clinical events. Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. Performs routine and complex equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation. Evaluates sleep study related equipment and inventory. Responds to study participant's procedural related inquiries by providing appropriate information. Demonstrates the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy. Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information in order to identify and meet the patient specific needs. Completes and verifies documentation. Explains the procedure and orients patients to the sleep lab. Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary. Applies electrodes and sensors to patient according to accepted published standards. Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting using fitting templates. Follows procedural protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data. Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact free and makes adjustments, if necessary Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedures and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Recognizes and identifies patients that require therapeutic intervention such as cpap and facilitates patient setup with home cpap unit or schedules patient for in house cpap or bi pap titration with a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Calls and schedules patients for CPAP compliance. Participates in equipment care, cleaning, and maintenance. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care. Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal relationship skills when interacting with other members of the health care team or patients. Displays tact and courteous behavior when working with staff and patients. Actively participates in educational programs and staff meetings that are scheduled by department. Maintains a clean work space. Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service. Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues. Upholds Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. Complies with the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist's (BPRT) Standards of Conduct. Consistently supports compliance and Principles of Responsibility (Kaiser Permanente's Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non compliance, and adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements (if applicable), and Kaiser Permanente's polices and procedures. Notes: This is an On-call position, schedule may vary according to department needs. May work 10 hours per week. Will work primarily weekend shifts.
