Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Respiratory Care Services

SCHEDULE: Short hour, 12 hours/week, Day shift, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 8:30am to 12:30pm

EDUCATION: High School Diploma/GED. Graduate from a respiratory care education program supported by CoARC or accredited by CAAHEP with Associates of Arts or Science degree required.

If no Associates of Arts or Science degree, in addition to graduation from a respiratory care education program supported by CoARC or accredited by CAAHEP, must have 62 semester hours of college credit, including a background in the basic sciences, or baccalaureate degree in an area other than respiratory care.

Respiratory Care Practitioners who received their RCP license prior to 1986 and currently working at Kaiser Permanente are exempt from this educational requirement.

CERTIFICATION:
RC Permittee: None

RCPI/RCPII: Certified (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of California. Certified or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist by the National Board for Respiratory Care preferred, may be required at some medical centers. Registered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists preferred, may be required at some medical centers. Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist by the National Board preferred, may be required at some medical centers. Respiratory Care Practitioners I and II who received their RCP license prior to 1986 and currently working at Kaiser Permanente are exempt from obtaining their CRT credential.

RRCPI/RRCPII: All of the above certification, plus Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Registered Respiratory Care Practitioners I and II who received their RCP license prior to 1986 and currently working at Kaiser Permanente are exempt from obtaining their CRT credential.

LICENSURE:
RC Permittee: Possession of a work permit issued by the Respiratory Care Board of California. RCPI/RRCPI/RCPII/RRCPII: Respiratory Care Practitioner, California

ALL:
BLS, Depending on the particular specialty, ACLS, NRP or PALS may be required for this position.

JOB SUMMARY:

RC PERMITTEE
Under physician supervision, delivers respiratory care services to patients in accordance with policies and procedures approved by the Medical Director. Works under the direct guidance and supervision of a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Standards of performance for the area to which the individual is assigned must be maintained.

RCPI/RRCPI/RCPII/RRCPII
Under supervision of a physician experienced in respiratory care, in accordance with policies and procedures approved by the Medical Director, is expected to assume clinical responsibility for specific respiratory care modalities and to adjust or modify therapeutic techniques within well-defined procedures based on a limited range of patient responses. Works under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor or the direction of a technical lead to deliver respiratory care services to patients in all areas of the hospital. Must be able to adapt to the particular area of duty assignment and to perform special duties required by the assignment. Standards of performance for the area to which the individual is assigned must be maintained. Experience to include ambulatory polysomnography set up, editing and scoring.

Special duties may be include provision of basic and advanced respiratory care to neonatal and pediatric patients in the intensive care unit and during transport, which frequently requires making rapid decisions and assisting physicians to respond to status changes in neonatal and pediatric patients. Special duties may include performance of a variety of diagnostic tests of the cardiopulmonary system and to determine the effect of disease and treatment on that system..

QUALIFICATIONS:
RC Permittee = None

RRCPI/RCP I = 1 year recent critical care experience preferred, may be required at some medical centers. At least one year of clinical experience in neonatal/pediatric respiratory care experience preferred, may be required at some medical centers.

RRCPII/RCP II = At least 3 years regular (20 hours or more per week) recent experience as Respiratory Care Practitioner. At least 1 year recent critical care experience preferred, may be required at some medical centers. At least one year of clinical experience in neonatal/pediatric respiratory care experience preferred, may be required at some medical centers. At least 1 year of clinical experience in the field of polysomnography preferred, may be required for this position.

High School Diploma/GED.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, technical manuals, and short correspondence or memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to speak and understand spoken English
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for RCP I and RCPII:
Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of California

Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of California
Certification (CRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care. Respiratory Care Practitioners who received their RCP license prior to 1986 and currently working at Kaiser Permanente are exempt from obtaining their CRT credential.
Registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care.

DUTIES: Essential Duties and Responsibilities, Compliance Accountability, Competencies, Physical Demands and Work Environment (please see specific job descriptions for description)

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES: Special duties are sleep testing, data collection, and editing functions to support the ambulatory sleep apnea program. Assists in the presentation of patient sleep apnea training program. Interacts with physicians and patients regarding sleep apnea testing and treatment. Performs pulmonary function testing. Interacts with DME coordinators and outside contract vendor. may be include provision of basic and advanced respiratory care to neonatal and pediatric patients in the intensive care unit and during transport, which frequently requires making rapid decisions and assisting physicians to respond to status changes in neonatal and pediatric patients. Special duties may include performance of a variety of diagnostic tests of the cardiopulmonary system and to determine the effect of disease and treatment on that system.
