Job Description
Pay Grade: 26
Qualifications: Graduate of a 2 year Respiratory Care Accrediting Board (RCAB) approved school and passage of the registry examination. Credential: Possess the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC). Certified Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential. Certification by the State of California as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. BLS. Ability to provide functional direction to other RCPs I, II and III in Med/Surg, Adult and pediatric Intensive Care areas and Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU). Experience requirements may be waived or modified when an appropriate program or course is available and successfully completed for New Graduate RCP's or for area of specialization. Consistently demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to customers, contracted providers, and vendors.
Preferred Qualifications: BRPT certification. Credentialed as an RPSGT. Five (5) years of Sleep Lab experience within the last seven (7) years. Previous experience as a Tech (within the last five (5) years) with scoring sleep studies. Conducts ambulatory sleep studies, conducts MSLT's and MWT's, and experience as an overnight Tech. 10 key machine. Computer knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Sleep Lab software (Viasys).
Duties: Upholds Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. QUALITY OF SERVICE: Professional Conduct: Applies philosophy and demonstrates knowledge of the Patient Bill of Rights. Treats members, coworkers, and individual employees with respect and dignity. Maintains the privacy and confidentiality of both members and employees with regard to medical records and communication regarding disease, conditions, and status. Greet members promptly and courteously, addresses adult members by their proper title (i.e., Mr., Mrs., Ms.) and last name except when otherwise mutually agreed upon by the provider and patient. Telephone Courtesy and Assistance: Adheres to regional and department guidelines for courtesy and consideration during telephone use. Determines and documents the following information upon taking a phone call: name of patient, phone number where patient can be reached, the reason (nature & urgency) for the call, date and time of the call and name of the person taking the call. Gives immediately to the requested provider or designee all messages of an emergency or urgent nature, gives non urgent messages to the requested provider or designee in a timely manner. JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES : Respiratory Care Practitioner Lead Responsibilities: Ensures that workload is assigned to staff. Makes checks 2 times per shift with staff to assure smooth operation of the shift. Adjust assignment to accommodate new patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, or changes in patient condition, or a change in available personnel. Consults with department administrator or designee when unable to meet respiratory care request. Determines patient/staff ratio for oncoming shift, notifying department administrator when oncoming staff does not meet the departmental ratio requirements, according to staffing guidelines. Provides verbal and/or written feedback regarding technical performance for employee evaluation. Schedules breaks and meals so that the required numbers of RCP's are available for patient care at all times or so that respiratory care needs of patient on assigned units can be met. Ensuring that all respiratory car personnel have had break/meals. Expedites and coordinates inter/intra hospital patient transfers. Evaluates status of patient to be transferred and determines respiratory care equipment needs for patient transfer. Designates/assigns RCP to accompany patient during transport. Records duration and site of patient transfer. Audits RCP charting for completeness of documentation required by Department policy and procedure, and RCP Performance Standards. Performs/makes rounds daily on patient care units to evaluate respiratory care services operation. Assures that procedures are performed with specified time periods. Responds immediately to request for assistance when a procedure is in progress or when safety is an issue. Examines reported equipment to determine if problem is due to technical error versus equipment malfunction. Corrects error or equipment malfunction when possible or reports the problems as required. Documents all equipment malfunctions as required and assure equipment is transported to Biomedical Department according to established guidelines. Informs staff of malfunction and posts malfunction notice on equipment. Checks for proper equipment function/operation at beginning and end of shift. Ensures that staff have maintained inventory levels of respiratory care supplies within assigned areas, RC department, critical care units and satellite equipment storage areas. Informs department administrator of all special supply needs or requests. Ensures Quality Control of the Blood Gas instruments are performed and documented according to established policy and procedures. Reports "Out of Control" values and "Unscheduled maintenance" activities within blood gas lab(s) and to department administrator or designee. Assures that new and current staff are oriented to specific unit operation and function. Provides recommendations for scheduling staff to attend inservices classes/programs. Identifies intradepartmental problems related to patient care, equipment and personnel. Makes decisions/takes action within the scope of department/Medical Center policies, procedures, and protocols. Makes recommendations to the department administrator for resolution of problems. Respiratory Care Practitioner III ( includes all skills required of RCP I and RCP II): Functions at Independent Level in Neonatal Critical Care areas. Demonstrates ability to assess for implementation or discontinuance of mechanical ventilation. Demonstrates ability to implement all modalities of ventilation approved for use in the medical center. Demonstrates ability to adjust ventilator parameters in response to changes in acid base balance and oxygenation per protocol or Doctor's order. Demonstrates ability to effectively wean from mechanical ventilation per medical center protocols. Demonstrates ability to implement all respiratory modalities of care specific to Neonatal critical care in this medical center. Documents therapy and intervention in medical record per medical center policy and procedure. Respiratory Care Practitioner II: Functions at Independent Level in Adult Critical Care areas. Demonstrates ability to assess for implementation or discontinuance of mechanical ventilation. Demonstrates ability to implement all modalities of ventilation approved for use in the medical center. Demonstrates ability to adjust ventilator parameters in response to changes in acid base balance and oxygenation. Demonstrates ability to effectively wean from mechanical ventilator per medical center protocols.
