Job Description
Under the general direction of the Medical Director, the Department Director , Manager, Supervisors, Respiratory Care, the Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible to provide respiratory care services to neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients for St. Rose Dominican Hospital. These services will be delivered in accordance with specific physician orders and department policies and procedures. RCP Neonate pediatric providers will be required to work a minimum of 80% of scheduled shifts in critical care areas.


Essential Accountabilities

1. Reviews, collects, and evaluates relevant clinical data in an accurate and timely manner. Performs basic and advanced therapeutic procedures for neonate, pediatric and adult patients according to the quality guidelines established in the departmental policy and procedure manual. Must be able to work unsupervised with neonate, pediatric and adult critical care patients in all areas which includes, but is not limited to PICU, NICU, ICU, CCU, ER, Recovery, Cath Lab, Open-heart unit & any overflow area with critical care patients. Formulates an appropriate Respiratory Care plan based upon accurate patient assessment and current clinical Practice Guidelines
2. Communicates necessary changes in the Respiratory Care plan to physicians, preceptors, nurses, and others as appropriate in a timely manner. Provides effective education to patients, students and co-workers as appropriate.
3. Accurately and safely performs fundamental and advanced diagnostic procedures according to departmental policy and procedure. Assembles, checks, and corrects malfunctions and performs quality controls on equipment.
4. Performs emergency and acute Respiratory Care procedures in accordance with the quality guidelines in the departmental policy and procedure manual.
5. Actively participates in departmental quality assurance and continuous performance improvement activities.
6. Maintains clinical and professional competency based on established standards of practice.


Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Certification, Registration, or Licensure: Blood Gas Technologist License or Blood Gas Supervisor License from the State of Nevada and Credentials from the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist. License issued from Board of Medical Examiners to practice respiratory care. BLS, PALS and NRP required. ACLS within first year required. Neonatal Pediatric Specialist certification from NBRC preferred.

Minimum Education: High School Diploma. Completion of an approved school of Respiratory education by the National Board for Respiratory Care or its successor organization.

Minimum Experience: Competency and skill validation required prior to being promoted to this level.

Other: Outstanding clinical, communication and interpersonal skills required.

Supervision

1. Received: Medical Director, Director, Manager, Respiratory care and Supervisors, Respiratory care. Works under the minimal review of the Medical Director, Director, Manager or supervisor, those diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for which he has adequate education, training and experience and in which he has demonstrated a proficiency.

2. Given: RCP and Respiratory Interns/Students. RCP Critical Care, working towards advancement to RCP Neonate Pediatrics.

Interpersonal Relationships

Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to deal with all levels of customers. Has daily contact with a variety of people including patients, visitors and fellow employees.


Mental and Physical Effort

1. Physical: Must be able to walk and stand for long periods with some bending and stooping. Must be able to write and use computer terminal. Must be able to hear and talk over the telephone and in person with others. Must have manual dexterity to perform capillary and arterial punctures and operate machines used in procedures performed.

2. Mental: Must be flexible in a demanding environment. Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Must be able to deal with the sick and dying.

Union Representation: This position is represented by SEIU L1107 and is covered by the terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
